heic
What is a .heic file?
image/heic
HEIC is the HEIF container variant holding HEVC (H.265)-encoded still images, the default photo format on modern Apple devices. It offers strong compression with support for high bit depth, wide color, and image sequences or bursts. Decoding requires HEVC support, which is patent-encumbered and not universal.
How to use a .heic file
Use an example HEIC to test Apple-photo import, HEVC still-image decoding, and conversion pipelines that transcode HEIC to JPEG or PNG for broader compatibility.

- Format Set: Fruit Still Life (HEIC)A 1024×1024 fruit still life exported as HEIC: the HEIF/HEVC member of the conversion set, the format modern phones use for photos.
- Head and shoulders portrait of a black (heic)The same 512x512 photograph written as heic. What an iPhone produces by default, and what a lot of pipelines still cannot read. Every member of this group is identical pixels, so a decoder returning different dimensions or a different pixel count has lost something rather than simply produced a different file; the 24-bit PNG in this group is lossless and is the reference the lossy members are measured against Source plate a-av-f3.
